It’s great to go to church every Sunday, but is that what God wants from us?  The Word of God is pretty clear about how often we should have some contact with “wisdom.”

In Proverbs 8:1, it says wisdom and understanding lifts up her voice to us:

Proverbs 8:1

1 Does not wisdom call,

And understanding lift up her voice?

So we know wisdom is speaking in Proverbs 8.

The Hebrew word for wisdom is CHACHMA, and it means the word of God that you have learned and believed, like our word EPIGNOSIS in the New Testament.

Look what wisdom has to say:

Proverbs 8:30

30 Then I was beside Him, (Him refers to Jesus Christ) as a master workman;

And I was daily His delight,

Rejoicing always before Him,

Proverbs 8:34

34 "Blessed is the man who listens to me,

Watching daily at my gates,

Waiting at my doorposts.

Look what was commanded in the Old Testament:

Joshua 1:8

8 "This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success.

Psalms 1:2-3

2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD,

And in His law he meditates day and night.

3 He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water,

Which yields its fruit in its season

And its leaf does not wither;

And in whatever he does, he prospers.

Everybody wants success, right?  Well it’s not necessarily working hard that brings it!  REAL success comes from God, and meditating in the Word of God on a DAILY basis will bring success from God.  Spending some time in the Word of God every day will be its own reward!

I love the analogy to eating.  Maybe it’s just me, but I eat every day! Job said:

Job 23:12

12 "I have not departed from the command of His lips;

I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my necessary food.

Even Jesus made the same analogy:

Matt 4:4

4 But He answered and said, "It is written, "MAN SHALL NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE, BUT ON EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDS OUT OF THE MOUTH OF GOD.'" (A quote from Deuteronomy 8:1-3)

What about Jesus?  Did He take Monday through Saturday off?

Luke 19:47

47 And He was teaching daily in the temple; but the chief priests and the scribes and the leading men among the people were trying to destroy Him,

Matt 26:55

55 At that time Jesus said to the crowds, "Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me as you would against a robber? Every day I used to sit in the temple teaching and you did not seize Me.

Look what else Jesus said:

Luke 9:23

23 And He was saying to them all, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me.

What about the church in the New Testament?  Did they just meet on Sundays, and maybe on Wednesday night?

Acts 5:42

42 And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they kept right on teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.

Acts 2:46

46 Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart,

Acts 19:9

9 But when some were becoming hardened and disobedient, speaking evil of the Way before the people, he withdrew from them and took away the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus.

Acts 16:5

So the churches were being strengthened in the faith, and were increasing in number daily.

I believe the way God looks at it is this:  He gives us one day at a time, so the least we can do is give Him back a little tiny piece of it every day!
