One of the issues we struggle with as Christians is divine guidance. Haven’t you ever wondered, “What does God want me to do in this situation? Where does He want me to go? What is His will for me in this crisis?” We’re going to start a series to look at the guidance that God gives us.
Remember this principle first: if you are a believer in Jesus Christ, then you are a personal representative of Him on earth. The Word of God calls you an ambassador, a witness, and a priest. To represent Him effectively, you must be guided by God. Thankfully, we have this promise:
Isaiah 58:11
11 "And the
LORD will continually guide you,
And satisfy your
desire in scorched places,
And give strength to
your bones;
And you will be like
a watered garden,
And like a spring of
water whose waters do not fail.
Divine guidance is simply the principle of determining God’s will for your life. Look what this passage says:
Ephesians 5:17
17 So then do not be
foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.
A Christian who doesn’t know the will of God is declared to be a fool! So how do we keep from being foolish? To know what the will of God is, we must know what is in His mind. We learn what the will of God is through the Word of God.
1 Corinthians 2:16
16 For WHO HAS KNOWN
THE MIND OF THE LORD, THAT HE WILL INSTRUCT HIM? But we have the mind of
Christ.
The other key principle we have to understand before we get into the details of determining the will of God in every situation is the issue of the guidance of God the Holy Spirit.
Romans 8:14
14 For
all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.
Certainly, as believers, we all want to do the will of God for our life. Thankfully, God promises to lead and guide us in His will. But there is NO divine guidance apart from the Word of God and the leading ministry of God the Holy Spirit.
Next we’ll look at some specific commands for us regarding the will of God, and figure out how to do the will of God in EVERY situation that comes our way.
