We’ve seen in this study of divine guidance that a believer who doesn’t know the will of God is considered a fool. There are many things declared to be the will of God, but this verse sums it all up pretty well:
1 John 3:23
23 This is His commandment, (or
His WILL) that we believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one
another, just as He commanded us.
First, God’s will is for everyone to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. Once we are believers, His will is for us to grow and love one another, in the way He commands us.
We’ll get into the second part in more detail, but first think about this – it is the will of God that every single person be born again.
2 Peter 3:9b
9 … not wishing for
any to perish but for all to come to repentance.
1
Timothy 2:4
4
who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
Since God’s will is for every person to be saved, He has made provision through the work of Jesus Christ on the Cross. The only issue in salvation is “what do you think of Christ.”
1 John 2:17
17 The world is
passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives
forever.
The will of God here is simply believing
in Jesus Christ. Since it’s His will for us to be saved, He made this possible
by sending His uniquely born Son (John
Romans 5:8
8 But
God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ
died for us.
2 Corinthians 5:21
21 He made Him who
knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the
righteousness of God in Him.
It is impossible to do the will of God unless you begin at the Cross. Jesus Christ is the only way to God.
Acts
12 "And there is
salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been
given among men by which we must be saved."
John 14:6
6 Jesus said to him,
"I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but
through Me.
God declares over and over again in His word that His will is for everyone to be saved. Jesus Christ paid the penalty for the sins of the whole world – so the whole world has salvation available.
1 John 2:2
2 and He Himself is
the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the
whole world.
Salvation is simply a matter of accepting by faith the work that Jesus Christ has done for you.
So look on the bright side – as a believer, you have already done something that was God’s will! I know, as a Christian, you already know these principles, and probably most of these verses. But you must be ready to defend what it is you believe. Also, there is a lesson to be learned here about the Will of God.
Whatever God’s will is, He does everything that needs doing for it to be accomplished. If He desires all men to be saved, then He does all the work. If He desires something for you, He has done all the work!
Just like in salvation, to accomplish the will of God, we need only accept with faith.
We’ll look at what else the Word of God says is the will of God next.
