2 Peter 3:10-12
10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up.
11 Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness,
12 looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat!
It’s so easy to focus on the things that we see here on earth, but this tells us exactly what’s going to happen to that house, that car, and everything else here on this earth that we spend so much time worrying about.
Peter says that when we recognize the fact that EVERYTHING here on earth will be burned up in intense heat, it should make us act a different way!
Just a quick look at the Greek words used in verse 11 should give us an even better understanding of how we should be living:
Holy – hagiais – set apart to God, as if it were exclusively His
Conduct – anastrofais – walk, conduct, behavior, manner of life
Godliness – eusebeiai – Godliness, or spiritual life, especially with reference to the power used to accomplish things.
Holy conduct
We should live our life as if it were set apart to God exclusively. Remember, we belong to Him:
1 Corinthians 6:20
20 For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.
Godliness
Thankfully, when God demands we do something, He gives us the power to accomplish it. All we have to do to live our lives as set apart exclusively for God is to depend on the power He has given us: the power of God the Holy Spirit and the power of the Word of God.
There is only one thing that is truly eternal, and that’s the Word of God. It’s the only thing you CAN take with you when you go!
Isaiah 40:8
8 The grass withers, the flower fades,
But the word of our
God stands forever.
