Matthew 10:1-8
1 Jesus summoned His
twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them
out, and to heal every kind of disease and every kind of sickness.
2 Now the names of
the twelve apostles are these: The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and
Andrew his brother; and James the son of Zebedee, and
John his brother;
3 Philip and
Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus;
4
Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot, the one who betrayed Him.
5 These twelve Jesus
sent out after instructing them: "Do not go in the way of the Gentiles,
and do not enter any city of the Samaritans;
6 but rather go to
the lost sheep of the house of
7 "And as you
go, preach, saying, "The kingdom of heaven is at
hand.'
8 "Heal the
sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out
demons. Freely you received, freely give.
So finally, after two years of following Jesus and learning from Him, the disciples are being sent out on their own. Before you can go out and tell people about salvation, you have to learn the basics yourself! You must know that salvation is a work of God, and that all that is required of the sinner is to have faith that Jesus Christ died for their sins.
But don’t sit around and wait until you know every single thing in the Word of God before you go try to win souls. It’s crazy to think that one day, after learning enough, God will send you out to save souls. Remember, it’s God that accomplishes it all:
Philippians 2:13
13 for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.
And His pleasure is that everyone be saved:
1
Timothy 2:3-4
3 This is good and
acceptable in the sight of God our Savior,
4
who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
Remember, the Lord will accomplish everything you need in His grace to accomplish whatever it is He wants you to do. Look what He did – in verse 1 He gave these 12 men His messianic authority to cast out demons and to heal all kinds of sickness!
These 12 men were not perfect pictures of spiritual maturity. Peter is going to deny he even knows Jesus; Thomas is not going to believe in the resurrection until he sticks his finger in Jesus’ wounds; James and John argued about who was going to be greater in the kingdom. After Jesus is crucified, they all run off and hide by themselves, and lock themselves in a room. And even Judas is on this list!
So don’t wait until you feel worthy to go out and tell others about the salvation that’s available in Jesus Christ. If He wants you to evangelize (and He does), then it’s up to Him to provide you with the power, the will, and the correct words to accomplish His purpose.
God works in the believer who prays and trusts Him to work in him.
