At first glance, this is a passage related to working. But take a look at this passage in light of your spiritual life:
Proverbs 6:4-11
4 Give no sleep to your eyes,
Nor slumber to your eyelids;
This is not really talking about just being lazy in life, but about procrastination in your SPIRITUAL LIFE! It’s so easy to say, “I’ll get serious about my spiritual life soon.” But this passage tells us to get with it now:
5 Deliver yourself like a gazelle from the hunter's hand
And like a bird from the hand of the fowler.
6 Go to the ant, O sluggard,
Observe her ways and be wise,
7 Which, having no chief,
Officer or ruler,
8 Prepares her food in the summer
And gathers her provision in the harvest.
Just like the ant gathers up food, we should be gathering up spiritual food:
Jeremiah 15:16a
16 Your words were found and I ate them,
And Your words became for me a joy and the delight of my heart;
You have to store up the word of God that you learn, so you will be ready for whatever comes your way. God promises to give you the principles and promises that you need to get you through any situation, but if you’re lazy and putting off learning, you won’t be ready when the troubles come!
9 How long will you lie down, O sluggard?
When will you arise from your sleep?
10 "A little sleep, a little slumber,
A little folding of the hands to rest" --
Get up! Wake up and be excited about your spiritual life! God has fabulous things prepared for you, and the more you learn, the more you will be able to recognize them.
11 Your poverty will come in like a vagabond
And your need like an armed man.
Don’t live in spiritual poverty. So many believers today live a dirt poor and boring spiritual life, but that’s not what God has in mind for you. When you are lazy about your relationship with God, you will be poor and in need.
Wake up! The time to be serious about your relationship with God is now.
