Worry – worry is a state of restlessness or agitation producing mental disturbance, uneasiness, anxiety and painful uncertainty.  It’s also a mental attitude SIN in which there is soulish torment or anxiety regarding anything in life.

Make no mistake about it, worry is one of the easiest sins to fall into, but it is a sin!  What it comes down to, is that worry is a lack of faith in God:

Romans 14:23b

23 …whatever is not from faith is sin.

There are serious consequences to worry!  Stress can actually cause physical problems:

Proverbs 12:25

25 Anxiety in a man's heart weighs it down,

But a good word makes it glad.

Proverbs 17:22

22 A joyful heart is good medicine,

But a broken (or distressed) spirit dries up the bones.

As we saw in our look at Martha and Mary in Luke 10:38-42, worrying about one thing feeds on itself and causes worry in a lot of things!

Worry can also keep you from learning the Word of God and holding on to what you have learned.  In other words, it can distract you from the only thing that can keep you from worrying!

Matthew 13:22

22 "And the one on whom seed was sown among the thorns, this is the man who hears the word, and the worry of the world and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.

We can worry about our sins, our present problems, and even our future problems – the potential for worry is unending!

That’s why we are commanded NOT to worry!

Luke 12:29

29 "And do not seek what you will eat and what you will drink, and do not keep worrying.

Matthew 6:25-34

25 "For this reason I say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?

26 "Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they?

27 "And who of you by being worried can add a single hour to his life?

28 "And why are you worried about clothing? Observe how the lilies of the field grow; they do not toil nor do they spin,

29 yet I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these.

30 "But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you? You of little faith!

31 "Do not worry then, saying, "What will we eat?' or "What will we drink?' or "What will we wear for clothing?'

32 "For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.

33 "But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

34 "So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Think about it; if you worry about the possible problems of the future, then they come true, and you have added to their weight, or they don’t come true, and your worry is useless and a waste of time!

Remember, worry is simply an attack on the nature and integrity of God.  He is omniscient (He has always known about your problem), omnipotent (He can solve any problem in a snap) and omnipresent (He’s always with you.)

And since He loves you like a Father loves a son, He always has what’s best for you in mind.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 Be anxious for nothing, (stop worrying about ANYYTHING) but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

When you are faced with adversity, and tempted to worry, concentrate on the character of your Father and what He has promised you, and you will stop worrying!

Psalms 55:22

22 Cast your burden upon the LORD and He will sustain you;

He will never allow the righteous to be shaken.
