Last time we saw Jesus on the way to the house of Jairus, the synagogue official. Some people came up to him and told him his daughter was dead. This was the test that faced Jairus – believe what Jesus had promised, or believe what looks to be reality.
That’s where we pick up the story:
Mark
37 And He allowed no
one to accompany Him, except Peter and James and John the brother of James.
This becomes a private party! What’s the principle? When you walk by faith, you have the honor of going with the Lord where others do not.
Mark 5:38-42
38 They came to the
house of the synagogue official; and He saw a commotion, and people loudly
weeping and wailing.
What a scene this must have been! He is now looking at a mob of people who HAVE NO HOPE. They haven’t trusted in this promise:
John 11:25
25 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies,
39 And entering in,
He said to them, "Why make a commotion and weep? The child has not died,
but is asleep."
40 They began
laughing at Him. …
From the crowd’s perspective, the girl is dead. But from Jesus’, she has only fallen asleep.
He is God, and has the ability to wake her up from the dead. They are laughing because they don’t believe
Him. So what does He do? He throws out all the unbelievers who were
laughing at Him!
40 …But putting them
all out, He took along the child's father and mother and His own companions,
and entered the room where the child was.
They are walking by faith, and have the honor of going where
the others do not. When you have faith,
Oh the places you’ll go!
41 Taking the child
by the hand, He said to her, "Talitha kum!" (which translated
means, "Little girl, I say to you, get up!").
42 Immediately the
girl got up and began to walk, for she was twelve years old. And immediately
they were completely astounded.
They were just like the disciples in the boat! Remember them when Jesus calmed the storm:
Mark
41 They became very
much afraid and said to one another, "Who then is this, that even the wind
and the sea obey Him?"
I’ll tell you who this is. He is the Savior, the Son of the Living God! He has the power over life and death. Why are we so surprised when we see Him come through on His promises? How can we NOT have faith in Him and in His promises?
When you walk by faith in the Person and Promises of your Savior, not only will He take you places others cannot go, but He will show you wonderful things throughout your life that others will not be able to see.
