John 14:6
6 Jesus said to him,
"I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but
through Me.
Our study this week of Jesus’ statement in John 14:6
reminded me of the quote from C. S. Lewis. (Yes, he wrote some things besides Narnia!) I don’t
know exactly where he wrote this, but he said that Jesus was either Lord, a
liar, or a lunatic. It made me think
about the principle of the inerrancy of the Scriptures. (That big word simply means that it is completely without error!)
What does the Bible have to say about itself?
2 Timothy 3:16
16 All Scripture
is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for
correction, for training in righteousness;
Note that first word – ALL! This passage says that all scripture is THEOPNEUSTOS. The Greek word literally means God-breathed. You have to look at the Bible as the work of God the Holy Spirit, who inspired people to write exactly what God wanted written. Look at this passage:
2 Peter 1:20-21
20 But
know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one's own
interpretation,
21 for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by
the Holy Spirit spoke from God.
It’s just like a musical instrument – the way it sounds is based on the skill of the person playing it. You don’t applaud a violin; you applaud the one who plays it.
There are so many attacks on the Word of God today. As Christians, we have to understand that the Bible is NOT men writing about God, but God writing to men. To call it otherwise is to put it in the same class as any other book about God.
There are many things that you can base your thinking and your decision-making process on. You can be logical, rational, base things on what feels right or on your experience, or any number of other things. Our responsibility as a Christian is to base our thinking and our decisions on the Word of God alone. To do this, you must have absolute faith that the Bible is the complete and accurate Word of God. If the Bible contains errors, then it is not from God, and is not worthy of faith! If the Word of God has errors, then who is to say which parts are true? How can we believe that we really have a Savior in Jesus Christ? To reject the absolute inerrancy of the Word of God is to cast doubt on everything in it. It is a real all or nothing proposition!
You must have absolute confidence that the Bible is the actual, completely true Word of God to function faithfully as a Christian today. It is worthy of complete and total faith. If the Bible says it, it must be true!
